DSL or Digital Subscriber Line is a type of broadband Internet connection. This type of broadband Internet requires you to have a phone line. Unlike dial up, you can actually use the phone while you are connected to the internet.

What are the benefits of a DSL Internet connection?
DSL allows you to have faster internet connection than a dial up. It can offer faster access to information, faster downloads and much more.

Here are some of the benefits you can get from a broadband DSL Internet service.

Unlike dial ups, DSL allows a subscriber to make and receive phone calls while having an active internet connection. Dial up internet does not allow this, if someone calls you, your phone line will be busy. A DSL line also keeps your computer online as long as your computer is turned on.

With DSL you can talk to your friends, family or business associates with a web cam in real time. You can easily connect a microphone, web cam on your computer, and start using these accessories right away. This may be possible in some dial up, but since it has low speed, the data sent and received will usually be delayed or choppy.

Since you can actually use your voice in the internet in real time, you no longer need to call families and friends using expensive long distance calls from your traditional phone.

DSL also enables you to use VoIP technology. This technology virtually replaces your traditional phone with the internet. VoIP has free features your traditional phone company consider as additional features and chargeable.

Video Conferencing

Caller ID

Call Forwarding

Call Transfer

Call Waiting

Ringtones

Voice Mails

Free Long Distance Calls

These are just examples that VoIP offers and a lot more features are available.

Since you can conduct video conferencing, you no longer have to travel to meet with your business associates, therefore, saving you from travel expenses.

Another benefit from DSL internet is that you can play audio and video streams in the internet smoothly and without interruptions. You can now play your favorite internet radio stations while you surf the web or play your favorite music videos in the internet.

Playing online games that requires high-speed internet is now possible with the DSL internet. You can use your own PC or gaming consoles such as the PS2 or Xbox to play with other people from around the world and create an online community with adventure games.

Students can also improve their studies by using the DSL connection. Since DSL provides high-speed internet connection, students can now research more webpage that are required for their studies.

In dial ups, low speed internet connection restricts a student’s research to just a few webpage. This is because in dial up, loading webpage is too slow that a student will just stick to one or two websites to save time and money to do their research.

Online businesses can update their websites much faster in DSL than in dial up. Updating website for online businesses is crucial to inform their customers about the products they are selling.

Today, there are many DSL service providers in the market; choosing one is up to you. Research about the companies that provides this service before you buy their service and you can be sure about the quality of the DSL connection.

Ask your friends and family first who have this technology in their homes or businesses can also help you choose which DSL provider you want to work with.

By: Bob Hett

The ever-increasing demand for fast-paced Internet access has resulted in new cutting-edge technologies being offered by various service providers. Apart from being fast, these Internet services are cost-effective, user-friendly and hassle-free.

Choosing the right type of Internet service primarily depends on which technology is available in the area. The major types of high speed Internet access services include cable, DSL, wireless and satellite.

Cable Internet technology uses co-axial or fiber optic cables for accessing the Internet speedily. Apart from delivering television channels, cable wires are capable of handling Internet connections as well. Splitting the cable wire into two, with one connected to the television and the other to the computer, facilitates faster connectivity and access. Cable Internet service is extremely fast compared to traditional dial-up, is unlimited and reasonably inexpensive, as there is no cost for extra phone calls.

DSL Internet or Digital Subscriber Line Internet makes use of the existing bandwidth in telephone lines for Internet connectivity, as the telephone wire is capable of carrying data on varying frequencies. For using DSL Internet, it has to be ensured that the DSL signals do not interfere with telephone signals. Some of the prime advantages of DSL include being able to use the phone line while the Internet is on, a much higher speed than regular modems, and no requirement of fresh wiring.

Satellite Internet uses the technology of connecting to the Internet via satellites. The signals travel between the computer, satellite and ISP source. This technology is mostly used in areas where terrestrial Internet access is not possible, or in places which require frequent movement. Whether vessels at sea or remote military locations, satellite connections are available globally.

Wireless Internet access facilitates accessing the Internet while on the move, through mobiles and pocket PCs. This latest technology is still being improvised at various technological research centers. Based in areas which are frequented while traveling, like airports, hotels and restaurants, this service works on a wireless node.

All these technologies have succeeded in providing an impetus to communication via the Internet, by ensuring access at unprecedented speed.

By: Seth Miller

Since businesses and consumers have very different functions, it follows that their Internet connection needs wouldn’t be the same either. DSL is a viable option for both businesses and consumers. However there is a broad range of services that DSL offers. Fortunately, DSL is not a one size fits all type of deal. Instead, options are customizable depending on your needs.

Consumer Internet Uses

Anybody who has an Internet connection at home- which at this point is most people in North America- knows what consumer Internet needs are. These are the activities that you do on the Internet on a daily basis. Some activities are common among all users such as checking your email or Facebook account. These days, most people also download music from sites like iTunes, or watch movies on YouTube.

Since the majority of consumers are using the Internet for downloading music, videos and other multi-media, they need to have the bandwidth to support this. High bandwidth and high transfer rates are essential to making the consumer Internet experience successful.

Rarely do consumers use the Internet for uploading. Yes, occasionally people will upload their photos to Flickr or make a video of themselves singing along to their favorite song on YouTube. But generally speaking, consumers don’t upload data nearly as much as they download it.

Consumer Internet

DSL providers have come up with a way to give consumers exactly what they need without wasting bandwidth by giving them more than they will actually use. Since consumers download more than they upload, it makes sense that they would have more download bandwidth than upload bandwidth. This is where ADSL comes in.

ADSL stands for Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line. The asymmetrical part of ADSL is that the download and upload bandwidths and transfer rates are not equal- they’re asymmetrical. Download rates are around 8 Mbit/s whereas upload speeds are only 1 Mbit/s. This difference accounts for the fact that most consumers download far more than they upload. So instead of wasting space on something consumers don’t use, DSL providers give them more of what they do use.

Business Internet Uses

Businesses, whether they are small, medium-sized or huge corporations use more bandwidth than consumers. Hence, their Internet needs vary greatly from that of the consumer. Since businesses are doing business, they need to interact with their customers and therefore need to be able to upload information. Web sites become a gateway for businesses to interact with their clients.

On a daily basis businesses will upload forms, movies, pictures, data, articles and everything else that has to do with their business. Depending on the size of the business, this can amount to a lot of information uploaded every single day.

Like consumers, businesses are also downloading tons of information. In order to keep in contact with clients they need to have access to their information. This may be as simple as online form, or it may be more complicated like downloading entire presentations or video conferences from another branch. Whatever the use is, businesses need just as much bandwidth and speed for uploading as they do for downloading.

Business Internet

With their needs being so different, it wouldn’t make sense for businesses to have the same type of DSL services that consumers use. To meet the demands of businesses that need large bandwidth for both downloading and uploading, DSL providers have come up with SDSL.

SDSL is another form of DSL, where the ‘S’ stands for Symmetrical. Instead of having different upload and download transfer rates as with ADSL, SDSL offers transfer rates that are the same for both uploading and downloading. In this way, SDSL caters to the need for businesses to both upload and download at high rates.

No matter what your needs, if you’re a consumer just wanting to watch some funny videos on YouTube, or if you run a business that needs to upload information every day, there is a DSL service that is right for you.

By: Saleh Tousi

Internet services refer to the internet service provider (ISP) or to internet services such as the World Wide Web (WWW), internet e-mail services, file transfer protocol (FTP), or Telnet. Internet services give us the opportunity to interconnect with other computer networks and exchage data. This is possible through packet switching using standardized Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP). There are also various ways and technologies you can use to access the internet such as dial-up connections and digital subscriber line (DSL).

The World Wide Web or WWW, as an internet service, is the system of distributed servers that handle hypermedia documents such as those using the HyperText Markup Language or HTML. This is the method of presenting information in which selected words or phrases in the text are hyperlinked to other related information. These links can be other documents, graphics, videos or audio files. File Transfer Protocol or FTP, on the other hand, is an internet service that you can use to send, receive and share files across networks. There are different websites and applications that provide FTP services that you can use to move and keep your files in. This is also the internet service used for transferring files which are used for publishing websites.

Internet Service Provider or ISP, which is also called Internet Access Provider, is a company that provides individuals and business with access to the internet. There are different types of ISPs and these include:

online-services – such as American Online (AOL) and Microsoft (MSN) national ISPs – such as EarthLink and Mind Spring, are large companies that offer internet access in a wide geographical area small and independent ISPs – operate in local or regional markets

You can find the best ISP that will meet all your needs by checking the different companies offering this kind of internet service. You can actually start out by using those that come with your computer or you can ask experts on this matter to help you out.

Once you have decided on which Internet Service Provider to use, the next step is how to access your ISP by means of internet access and internet connection. There are different ways to access the internet and these include using:
Dial-Up connections – this needs a phone-line, a modem and an ISP connected to your computer ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network, a type of Dial-up connection with a faster speed but more expensive DSL – Digital Subscriber Line such as Asymmetric DSL and Symmetric DSL Cable – cable internet is connected through coaxial cables similarly used for cable TV Tier Carrier – consists of many tiers of speed T1 – Tier1 – very expensive but slow T3 – Tier3 – very fast and very expensive T2, T4, T5 Optical Cable – with speed of up to 1 Gbit

By: Ashley Conner

Internet access is no longer a luxury. Even high-speed Internet access has become very affordable over the last few years. In fact, broadband technology has revolutionized the concept of Internet access.

In the pre-broadband days, Internet access providers used to offer dial-up Internet connections. Slow connectivity was a major issue then. Downloading content was a time-consuming task.

But now, local Internet access providers are offering broadband Internet connections. They have tremendous speed and the downloading of content no longer takes hours. Just a click of the mouse can help you to download online content in a few minutes, be it text, audio, video or graphics.

In some parts of the world, Internet access providers still provide Internet connectivity through dial-up services. But wherever broadband technology has reached, Internet access is provided through digital subscriber line (DSL) or cable modems. Some service providers are also providing Internet access through satellite. In the near future, Internet access may be possible through high-voltage lines. Internet access providers often upgrade their technology in urban areas before they do it in rural areas. This is because they are able to recover their costs in urban areas much easily that in rural areas.

High-speed Internet access using broadband technology has increased the number of people using the Internet. In some of the less-developed parts of the world certain Internet access providers often market their “”high-speed connections”" though the speed of Internet access is less than 256 kilobits per second, which is the benchmark for a high speed Internet connection.

The number of Internet access providers and the range of services offered by them are likely to expand further. Your choice of an Internet access provider should be guided by several factors, such as the amount of time you are likely to spend on the Internet, volume of content you are going to download, whether you are using it for commercial or non-commercial purposes, and how much you can afford to pay.

By: Jennifer Bailey

It is invariably important that when you are looking to discover the right DSL service to run your online business through you need to spend time carrying out some in-depth research into the various assorted DSL service providers. If you’re doing a cable vs DSL service comparison, here are some tips to help. Therefore when looking at whether to use Digital Subscriber Line or Cable there are a number of facets that you should be taking into consideration.

Speed – In many circumstances the speed that cable runs compared to DSL is a lot quicker, all the same, there will be occasions that cable doesn’t do what it says it can. The downside is that individuals in the neighborhood who use the same service simultaneously time may draw on your service and slow the download speed of the cable connection.

Security Levels – You will find that both DSL and cable come with their own network security systems. But many people have genuine fears about the security of their system while using cable.

Particularly for those of you wishing to run an online business enterprise from home it is essential that you choose a service which will ensure that all the data your customers provide to you is well protected. Please make sure that you destroy this data or keep it in a safe place because there are those out there who would love to get a hold of it and use it for illegal gains.

Support Services – Just like cable service, it is [important that the customer and technical help be top of the line, regardless of the DSL service you select. Why should one pay an internet subscription that stops you being able to connect by encountering an error that nobody seems to be able to fix. Keep in mind you are running a business enterprise and you can not run your business concern effectively if you can not get online.

I have spent quite a bit of time looking for companies that provide similar services to DSL for lower prices. Doing this you will get first hand knowledge of just how good the supplier is and whether it will in reality be able to meet your individual requirements.

To get the best service you have to spend as much as possible to compare DSL to cable. By keeping the above pointers in mind will help you to discover the right service for you and your business enterprise.

By: Paul Abbey

Initially when DSL appeared as a new way of transmitting information over the internet it was referred to as “digital subscriber loop”. However today it is more commonly referred to as “digital subscriber line” which made it much more market friendly and certainly more easier for the layman to understand what it did. Today many DSL service providers in Houston and other cities, towns and states across America now offer homeowners ADSL.

But when it comes to looking for the right service provider for your DSL system what should you be considering. In this article we will take a look at some of the factors you need to consider to ensure that you get the best system possible.

Look for those DSL service providers who download speeds range from 256 to 24,000 kilobits per second (kbit/s). But just what range of speeds they have will depend on how technologically advance the systems they themselves are using.

In order to run DSL in your home you will need the following pieces of equipment which the service provider should give to you once you sign up to their service. They should provide you with a transceiver which then connects to their services and allows you to then gain access to the internet. It is the transceiver, which is more commonly referred to as a modem will connect you to the DSL line.

Often if you have more than one PC in your home that you wish to connect to a DSL line then you will be provided with a router so that you are able to connect all the PC’s via cables to the same DSL line. So this means then you do not need to have several DSL lines running in to your home in order for all PC’s to connect to the internet.

However you may find that when several of you are using the internet at the same time and someone chooses to do some downloading this can actually cause the speed at which yours runs to become some what slower. But it will not be as slow as that if you were choosing to use a dial up service.

The main advantage to using the facilities provided by DSL services providers in Houston and other cities and towns across the US is that the line connecting you to the internet is your own. So this means that no other person can be connected to it outside your own home so the actually system will run at optimum levels at all times. Whilst with a dial up service as more people are connected to it in the neighborhood where you live so the level of service and connection to the internet is greatly reduced.

By: Paul Abbey

Thank goodness for the Internet! How did we ever get along without it? The answer to that is simple: very slowly. Over the last decade, the World Wide Web has evolved to provide more access to more people all over the planet. As with every global expansion, it has presented all kinds of business opportunities for those looking for a piece of virtual pie. With so many DSL service providers in competition, how do you know which one to chose?

You need to speak the lingo. There’s a lot of jargon involved in technology. You have to understand what everything means so you can ask intelligent questions and make informed decisions. Part of what makes the process ridiculously complicated is that it’s common for various terms to be used for the same technology or equipment. The word broadband refers to technology that allows more than one channel to transmit over a single wire, as opposed to dial-up which only lets on channel on the wire at a time. Sometimes this word is used interchangeably with DSL. A modem is a box that converts the signal, either digital or analog, into something your computer can understand. There are different kinds of modems with different features: broadband, cable, wireless and dial-up.

DSL stands for digital subscriber line, referring to the fact that it used a phone line to transfer digital data. Unlike ancient dial-up connections, DSL will allow digital information and voice waves to travel over the same phone line at the same time, so there’s no need for the telephone to be tied up by the computer, and an intrusive phone call won’t knock you offline. Telephones and computers can coexist peacefully in the same home. DSL will only work over a limited distance, so it may not be possible to get that kind of service in a small town or rural community. Before you get too deep into your research, you had better contact your phone company to make sure that DSL is available in your area.

Your phone company may suggest some possible DLS providers that are active where you live. Of course, the first thing most people look at is the price. The cost of service typically doesn’t vary all that much. If you do stumble upon a provided that is significantly less than the others find out what’s wrong with them. Do they not offer any kind of customer service? No help with installation? Remember, you usually get what you pay for.

Once you’ve got a short list, evaluate which ISPs or internet service providers they work with. Also, most companies will want you to sign an agreement or a contract. Very similar to what you would enter into with a cell phone company. Most people would rather shoot for a short (typically a minimum of one year) contract. That way your options are as open as possible and you won’t be locked in for too long. However, if you’re confident in your choice, there are usually discounts and other perks offered to those who sign on for longer.

You will most likely be some new equipment involved, usually a router (modem) and some software installation. Check to make sure if you are buying the equipment or renting it. Will someone be coming to your home to set things up, or will that be your responsibility? If you’re not so techno savvy, look for a provider with 24-hour support. The deciding factor should be the amount of service and support you get for the price. You can visit http://www.dsl-service-providers-guide.com to learn more about broadband internet.

Besides freeing up your telephone line, the biggest draw if DSL is speed. You want to ask about the rate of both downloads and uploads to help make your decision.

By: Kelly Hunter

Do you find yourself waiting around for your Internet pages to load or digital photo files and other attachments to transfer?

Do your friends and family complain that they can never get through on the phone line because you or your kids are always online.Chances are you are still using dial up Internet service.Perhaps it’s time to consider an alternative method.

The main three types of high speed access include DSL,
cable and satellite Internet. At the current time, DSL service providers and cable are not available in all areas. Some parts of the country do not have access to either option. Good satellite Internet reception is dependant on an unobstructed line of sight to the south. So where you live can make a big difference in which high speed Internet service you choose.

Here are some overviews of each service and comparisons for those
fortunate to have more than one option available:

DSL Service Providers

DSL, which stands for Digital Subscriber Line, describes a
technology that taps into unused frequencies on copper telephone lines to
transmit information at much higher speeds. There is no dialup and accessing services. So access is immediate. With DSL, you can send both voice and high speed data over the same line. The bandwidth, or data transfer capacity, or DSL ranges from 128 Kbps to 1.544 Mbps downstream to your computer. Upstream transfer from your computer is usually limited to 128 Kbps. Bandwidth is dedicated so you don’t have to share with other users, but DSL is also more effective the closer you are to service provider’s facilities. If your local area has plenty of cable bandwidth available it may be a better option for those located greater distances from a DSL provider. Average monthly charges for DSL services are around $55-$65.

Verizon is one of the leading providers of high speed DSL
service, with a large coverage area. With Verizon DSL you get a monthly package for $34.95 that includes unlimited access with a personalized home page, 9 e-mail accounts, and 10 megabytes of web space. For those customers with multiple computers in the home, there is a home
networking option available. You can connect multiple home computers and laptops to a single high-speed DSL Internet connection at no additional monthly cost.

Earthlink DSL is another option. Their basic package, which includes the same features as Verizon’s offer also includes a free dial-up service which allows you to enjoy 20 hours of Internet access per month when you’re away from home. This package typically costs $39.99 per month. Earthlink also offers cable and satellite Internet.

As noted, DSL uses copper telephone wires. Rural areas and some cities do not have these wires available for large volume use, which means that DSL is not yet an option in those areas, even if Verizon, Earthlink or another provider offers services there.

Cable

If you have cable TV available in your area, chances are
that you have access to Internet through your cable provider. This service uses the same wires as your cable TV programming and depending on the provider and the area, there may be a good deal of bandwidth available or a more limited amount. Because users share bandwidth, this could be an issue for those living in areas with limited amounts available for Internet use. It is a good question to ask your cable provider before signing up. Your choice for cable Internet is typically limited to only those providers who offer cable TV in your area. On average, cable Internet does tend to be a bit faster than DSL. Service is often slightly less expensive than DSL, averaging around $45 per month.

Satellite

If you do not have DSL or cable Internet available in your
area, satellite Internet may provide a viable option. Its speed is comparable to other high speed Internet services, its always on, and you have the option of adding satellite TV service. However, it requires that you have a clear view of the southern sky from your home anywhere in the continental United States in order to receive good reception from the satellites. The service is typically a good deal more expensive than the other two high speed options discussed, averaging around $100 per month with installation fees of up to $400.

Some people confuse satellite Internet with what’s known
as WiFi. WiFi Internet services are actually provided by access nodes located in high traffic areas such as airports and hotel or through Internet cafes. If you have a laptop equipped with WiFi receiver, you can access services from within about 1000 feet of the node. There is typically a fee to use this service. It is a good idea for travelers but does not meet the need for home Internet use because it required the access node.

Although there are several satellite Internet providers,
they all use similar technology. DirecTV is a popular provider because they are also a top satellite TV company. DirecTV satellite Internet service is delivered through a wholly owned subsidiary, DIRECWAY. DirecTV satellite Internet costs $99.99 per month and requires customers to purchase a satellite dish and modem. Installation is typically available from the distributor.

Comparisons

Consult a comparison chart such as the High Speed Internet
Guide which should give you a fair idea of the speed and costs involved. However, it is important to note that the data transfer rates you can get from either DSL or Cable will depend entirely on whatever local providers are in your area.

By: C.J.
